The most recent picture I have of myself. I think this is actually kind of cute.

New camera arrived right before thanksgiving and I took several test pictures, but accidentally left the cord to download them at Ben's. This weekend was circlefest up in university circle and it was the first time I got to really play with the camera in strange lighting conditions. I took several pictures from the Natural History Museum and the Botanical Gardens, but this is one of my favorite.

Oh how things change and stay the same. This is me from March 08. My hair is longer and I have contacts that I sometimes wear. I like how the pattern on my shirt almost looks edible to the dinosaurs. It really makes me think of The Land Before Time.

I am reaching a bit back in time here. This is from the Ohio Cavern in southern Ohio. I think many of the pictures came out relatively well, though I missed some due to the quick pace of the tour and my camera malfunctioning. I think it reminds me of dinosaurs.
New camera has shipped with an estimated arrival date of Wednesday!

This was also taken on my trip to New york in March. I forget what exactly it is. I think an Ammonite shell is what it really is, but the rainbow coloring is unique and due to where it was found (in Canada?) I really like this photo, though with colors like that it is kind of hard to mess up. I think i am ordering the new digital camera tonight. Yay!

I have loved the unicorn tapestries since I was a little girl watching The Last Unicorn. During spring break (March 08) I was able to actually see the tapestries in real life. Going back to New York next month I hope to be able to visit them and maybe get some better pictures.

Another blurry picture. I had to keep the flash off because we weren't supposed to be taking pictures. The only museums I have ever gone to that had problems with cameras both had carousel displays. What the heck? I like the color and the lighting on this quite a bit though.
Also I have found the camera upgrade that I want. The Samsung L210

This is a picture from a summer trip to the metropark in Lorain. Ben slid down the cliff to try and get a picture of a yellow butterfly.
Today was a bit of a blah day all around. I wanted to post a picture before bed to make myself feel better, figuring I would pick something cheery. However I think this picture kind of fits the mood. This is one time where I actually like the framing of the composition, and I wasn't even trying for anything. I like how the human figure is so dark calling your attention to it, but also how the figure looks so small in comparison with the rocks and water. I also think it is kind of cool how calm Ben looks after sliding down the cliff because he is completely focused on the butterfly, which is just this amazing, beautiful creature that lives for what a month? The whole thing is just a bit humbling and makes you happy to be alive.

Blurry, blurry. But I like the colors. I just took a quick picture before walking out of the house so I could enjoy my flowers. I actually got them almost a week ago and they are still alive and perky. I wish I had paid attention to what kinds of flowers they were, but I wasn't, sorry.
I am trying to look into a new camera for Christmas. Amazon reviews show the problem with my camera (freezing) is pretty typical. A friend on livejournal said to grab something with image stabilization so I will probably do that. Hopefully I will have a new camera before I go to New York in December!

Hahaha, so much for my wanting to post a picture every day. I haven't been using my camera much at all lately, too busy with finals and moving out. But I did stop one morning to take a picture of the beautiful tree in my backyard. I am actually rather pleased with how this image came out considering the short amount of time and the lighting I had to work with.
1984- George Orwell
So I have finished 1984. No, I have never read it before, which is why when I was bored on lunch Monday I pulled it off the shelf. I can honestly say I don't know if I liked the book or not. In general I dislike dystopias as like horror they make me a bit upset in my stomach and they are kind of hard to read. I am a reader who lives for characters and story, and the dystopias always seem to head off on tangents. I know there are some parts about the book I disliked. Julia is one of those parts, but who is honestly surprised at that? I like that she is a mechanic, strong, smart, etc. I really dislike that she is portrayed rather sluttish. While it is never really implied in the book part of me really wonders if she wasn't in on it much earlier than Winston believes.
Ben said "One of the lessons I learned from 1984 is that words may be used as much to mislead and confuse as to express and clarify." I think this is why out of everything in the book I find the stripping of language the scariest. I know we talked about how there is the theory that something cannot be created until there is the language for it, and the reduction of language is just such a scary concept.
So no, I don't think I can say that I liked the book. But it is interesting and I am glad I read it. I think it will be one of those books that really sticks with me.
The Betterphoto Guide to Digital Photography - Jim Miotke
I technically finished this book Monday morning, but didn’t have a chance to really think about anything yet. There are a great many things I like about this book. It talks about technical things in a very clear format and really focuses on taking pictures instead of touching them up in photoshop. I also love the fact that the author is aware that not everyone can just drop hundreds of dollars on a digital SLR camera and lenses. I apparently did remember a lot of things from my failed attempt at photography class like aperture, ISO, the rule of thirds, etc.
However, I also read about several things I did not know or had never figured out. I actually understand EXIF data and the zoom feature now! I really need to sit down with my camera and see if I have the focus lock feature. Having control over what shows up in focus and what doesn’t is one of the big problems I had run into.
My one criticism about the book would be that the chapters on composition, line, and pattern seemed relatively small when compared to the large chapters about technical things like ISO and aperture. I would have loved to see a chapter devoted to color in composition, macro photography, angles, or just more general tips for making a picture look better.
Now I am taking a break from reading about photography to read 1984. No, I have never read 1984. It always shocks people, and while I don’t think I will particularly like it, I imagine it is still an interesting book and one worth reading.
